# Curate overview

Curate is a knowledge management solution—a searchable, private database of variants curated by your team.

If you encounter a variant that is already in your Curate database, it will be [highlighted](/emedgene/emedgene-curate-manual/curate_variants/curate_variant_annotations_in_the_case.md) in the [Variant table](/emedgene/emedgene-analyze-manual/reviewing_a_case/analysis-tools-tab-beta-v100.39.0+/variant_table.md) and on the [Variant page](/emedgene/emedgene-analyze-manual/variant_page/variant_page.md).

Curate:

* saves you time and effort to filter, prioritize and interpret variants
* allows for variant interpretation consistency
* simplifies variant reanalysis

**Note:** To gain access to the Curate application, you will need the appropriate [user roles](/emedgene/emedgene-analyze-manual/settings/user_roles.md). Additional roles are also required if you want permissions to export variants, create variants or update any information stored in Curate.
