# User access management in legacy Emedgene environments

For legacy Emedgene environments, user access is managed within the platform via the User Management tab in Settings. The smallest unit of access control in in legacy Emedgene environments is an [Emedgene role](/emedgene/emedgene-analyze-manual/settings/user_roles/iam-scopes-emedgene-roles.md).

The User management tab enables organization administrators to [manage user access](/emedgene/emedgene-analyze-manual/settings/user_roles.md) in legacy Emedgene environments.

Administrators can:

* **Add new users** and assign specific Emedgene roles.
* **Review and change permissions** and personal details for each user.
* **Inactivate user access** when needed.

Each role includes a tooltip that briefly describes its function, helping you select the appropriate role. You can also use predefined permission sets—**Analyst**, **Director**, **Manager**, and **IT Team**—as starting points.
